What Is Green Sea Moss?
Green sea moss is an edible red seaweed grown in warm tropical waters. Caribbean sea moss is usually Eucheuma cottonii (Kappaphycus alvarezii), and “green” refers to its natural color variant. One study found no significant nutritional differences between its red and green strains. It contains chlorophyll along with other natural pigments.
Nutrition & Research
Published analyses of E. cottonii and K. alvarezii report dietary fiber (mainly kappa-carrageenan), plant protein and amino acids, minerals (calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, iron, zinc, copper, selenium, iodine), and vitamin C. Figures are for dried seaweed and vary by season and harvest site, so a prepared gel contains less per spoonful. Iodine levels vary, so if you have a thyroid condition, are pregnant, or take medication, check with your healthcare provider before adding sea moss regularly.
